(I've volunteered at a Shelter before - it's a lot of work, but, it's worth it.)
Nicole stroked the cat on her lap happily, rubbing it behind it's ears as it purred appreciatively. If there was one thing the girl loved, it was cats. They were so unconditional. This one had pale green eyes and a brown tabby pelt. Her belly was swollen from kittens - as soon as that had happened, the owner had left her on the steps. Jerk. Thought Nicole as the cat purred lovingly. There's only a ten dollar fee for dropping animals off inside. Where they won't - I don't know - freeze to death? The cat, who Nicole had named Alsoomse which meant 'independent' in a Native American language. She had, through a bit of begging, convinced her mother to foster the cat. As soon as the paperwork was filled out, she could take the cat home. Smiling at the idea, she stroked the cat again.
Alsoomse jumped off her lap landing on the floor and walking over to one of the dangling toys and batting at it a little. This gave Nicole an idea. Taking off her necklace, the one she could use to turn into a cat, she dangled it above Alsoomse's head. The she-cat batted at it, swiping as the mocking object dangled before her. Nicole was careful to keep and strenuous activity down, considering how far along Alsoomse was in her pregnancy, but, she still had fun. The cat pulled the neck lace out of her hands and dragged it off to leave it in her food bowl. Nicole laughed and bent down to stroke the cat's head. [be]"Such a nice girl, aren't you Alsoomse?"[/be] She asked softly, rubbing the cat's head.
After glancing at her watch, Nicole decided she'd been here long enough. Grabbing her necklace out of the bowl and putting it back on, she opened the door. Alsoomse meowed unhappily as she left, but, adjusted quickly to being alone again. Due to her pregnancy, she'd gotten a whole room and not a cage. Nicole gave a goodbye wave as she left, grabbing her pass from a hook on the wall near the room. She returned it to it's original space, in one of the well-organized volunteer drawers and jogged out into the winter air, pulling on her jacket over her T-shirt.
